Multiplicity

We had two incredible writing classes the past  few weeks with Peter Thomas and Sam Murray. I enjoyed them beyond what I could have expected, as they truly made me think of writing in a complete different manner. I've always seen writing as a functional or creative tool, but I never really considered it as a means of learning. This is quite a 'revolutionising' shift in perspective for me, as I believe it will change a lot in my personal practice.

I decided to give a go to the 'free flow' writing exercise we were introduced to in our first class, to figure out what I really wanted to share here on my blog. I was surprised by the result, as when we allow our brain to wander on the blank page, things we couldn't foresee do start to surface. 

One thing I could have never anticipated, is how free flow writing can help reveal diverse perspectives on things one has within oneself. Yes...I know this sounds bizarre, but I actually think that I start believing it possible to be true to oneself when having diverse points of view coexisting together. This is quite a hard pill to swallow for the Yoga teacher in me seeking for unity and oneness...but somehow I am coming to terms with the fact that the student in me needs multiplicity to grow, learn and discover. 

Multiplicity does not create an accessible walkable continuum in our thoughts, but scattered segmented fragments of points of view. There is space between these separate parts, and within that space potential for growth. 

I am starting to believe that Multiplicity is in the learning process the antonym of absolutism, one of the initiators of new discoveries for humankind. It is in doubting what we once believed the absolute truth that we start projecting various alternative possibilities, and the curiosity to explore and question these, is the motor that opens the faucet for growth and reflection to freely flow.

  1. Hi Elly, It is good to hear your thoughts about free flow writing...since I am so interested myself in embodied flow in motion, in experimental writing, acting... Being in a flow, forget ourselves, find those moments where were involved, willing to be alone, tolerate solitude, finding flow in solitude and being creative it is necessary to learn it...How is it flow possible? It is possible if one is having a clear goals, all along a way, able to get very clear feedback, balance between challenge and skill, the process of focus and concentration, to be really absorbed, than forget to think about oneself, to forget about the sense of time... If one's feel very involved, paying attention, enjoying and doing the right thing, then you can be in control (cause in the end, fluidity is control) and doing things properly. "Wherever there is a need for the improvement of life, the flow theory can point the way" (Csikszentmihalyi, Mihaly-flow theorist )According to him, flow is related to optimism, creativity, hope and positive way of thinking, cause while we floating we are losing self-consciousness but still strongly connected to that what we are doing, weather dancing, writing or acting. Good concentration leads to a feeling of spontaneity, effortless behavior and enjoying of what person is doing. Find enjoyment in the work, that is the key of every FLOW.

  2. Love reading your exploration of Self. I find myself constantly having to remind myself that I am a fluid being, nothing in life is static or stationary and neither am I. Once we see and believe this fact that we are able to flow more freely and intuitively towards that which feels right. Being in unity/oneness for me isn't a finishing line. But rather an opportunity to live and be in harmony. I've found the process of free flow writing not only cathartic but also allows me the ability to realign my self, my thoughts, words, actions; decipher, bring awareness and understanding to them and then reconstruct them into a more useful position. I found the 'Self on Page' as well as the 'Mindful Brain' useful texts to helps is understand neurologically and well as psychologically why free flow writing is such a useful process.
